Q: Have you always lived a healthy fit lifestyle?
I have been a competitive athlete since the 3rd grade when I picked up a field hockey stick. I played sports through elementary and high school, and competed as a Division I field hockey player at the College of William and Mary. Even though I was training on a daily basis, cafeteria food, alcohol, and late night munchies packed on the pounds very quickly. After college, I continued to workout, compete in ½ marathons, squash events, and strength train, but I was still eating poorly, and eating and going out way too much.
So after ending a five year relationship and being let go from a corporate job, I realized it was time to take better care of my body, both physically, nutritionally, and mentally. Professionally, I became a certified NASM Personal Trainer and Yoga Instructor and I’m currently in the process of opening my own studio. Physically and nutritionally, I did extensive research on how to fuel, nourish, and take care of my body, but I also leaned on friends for support and guidance. Two simple changes I made to my diet were: to eat breakfast every day and to always include a protein, healthy fat, and a complex carbohydrate with each meal. Physically, I started by training six days a week (now I’ve cut back to 5). I continue to sign up for events to keep me motivated, focused, and on a training schedule. My workouts combine yoga, running, cycling, and strength training. I’m always up for trying to new things to prevent boredom, but to also keep my body guessing.
I have come a long way and I feel amazing. It hasn’t been easy, but I have learned so much about myself and what my mind and body are capable of. I continue to educate myself on nutrition and strength training to help both my clients and myself. I love to train myself and train my clients.
Q: What keeps you going, motivated?
After a hard workout, nothing beats the feeling of being sweaty, sore, and tired, but yet somehow, I’m still smiling. Working out makes me feel so good mentally and physically. I feel focused, motivated, and determined to tackle whatever the days have in store for me. Living a long and active life is also what keeps me motivated to keep training and eating well.
Q: What is your favorite workout?
My absolute favorite workout is a long run! I love being able to put on my running shoes, headphones, and just go. My best runs are ones when I set no distance, don’t wear a watch, and just head out. Running is therapeutic for me. It clears my mind and makes my body feel strong, and always leaves me smiling.
Q: What are some of your goals?
• Run 2x ½ marathons in 2012
• To be able to get up into forearm stand and headstand in my yoga practice
• Travel more
• To overcome my fear of public speaking
Q: What are some of your accomplishments or things you’re proud of?
I’m proud of the fact that I am doing what I love. It took me a while to get to this point, but I am so happy with how far I have come as an athlete, personal trainer, and business owner. To own my own business is an accomplishment that I am most proud of!
Q: What is one random fact we should know about you?
I was a ski instructor for one season in Vail, CO, where I taught 3-6 year olds. I learned a lot about patience, but also how fearless children are at this age!
Q: What words of advice would you like to leave the readers?
Life is too short, so make sure you live a healthy and active lifestyle; enjoy the things you love; always challenge yourself; laugh; and be grateful for family and friends
