Yep it’s Tuesday and with that “T” theme…
Today is Tabata Training Tuesday (say that real fast five times!)
What is tabata you ask?
Tabata is a method of interval training.
It’s touted as being is the single most effective type of high intensity interval training and most intense too.
While it’s only 4 minutes short (you can do anything for four minutes right!? RIGHT!), during those 4 minutes though it has amazing effects on your body.
Dr. Tabata discovered that this kind of interval training produces much better results than aerobic training. This included building as much muscular endurance as forty five minutes of normal cardio training. In fact in the study the subjects increased their anaerobic capacity by over a quarter as well a substantial increase in their aerobic fitness.
Here’s the basic structure of Tabata Training:
Push hard for 20 seconds
Rest for 10 seconds.
Repeat this eight times.
Benefits of Tabata
It burns fat-and keeps burning – Tabata raises your metabolism.
It’s quick-you get the same benefits of longer workouts in a shorter amount of time.
You can use this method with anything-from jumping jacks, squats, to biking, running.
Tabata works – the technique has been researched, and it is becoming extremely mainstream and popular since people are getting the results they want.
I’m going to be doing this in a bit in the condo gym on the elliptical
Here’s a quick example of a bike tabata training session.
If you need a Tabata timer, check out tabatatimer.com, it has different alerts for work and rest and when the session is over for the 4 minutes.
Or this one:
Question of the day:
Have you done Tabata training?
If so, with what exercises?
If not, why not? Get going…it only takes 4 minutes!
Sam Buck says
This sounds exciting! I’m wondering if it would work as well with running/jogging?
Tara Burner says
Yes yes yes! you sprint for 20 seconds, take 10 sec break, sprint for 20 seconds and keep going like that for the 4 minutes ๐
Sam Buck says
Sounds like a plan to me! I’ll let you know how it goes ๐
Doug says
“you can do anything for 4 minutes”
Classic.
