Lack of time is one of the most commonly used excuses for not working out or exercising.
Everyone has 24 hours in a day, most people have hectic schedules, rushing, crazed…
Trying to juggle family, home, work, time to relax and of course the time it takes to exercise is usually the one that’s forgotten.
Even if you manage to get in 10 minutes of physical activity is better than nothing.
Ideally you want to exercise longer but something is better than nothing.
Tips on how to fit exercise into your busy day:
Wake up early.
Yes, you need a good nights sleep but if you get up even 30 minutes earlier you can do a quick run, some yoga, do a high intensity workout and get your day started on a healthy fit note.
There’s nothing like starting the day off with exercise.
It helps control your appetite, gives you a boost of energy and nothing will interrupt you from exercising.
Incorporate exercise into your commute.
If you work out of your home, instead of driving to work ride a bike.
If you take the bus, get off a few stops early and walk the rest of the way.
If there’s no way around it and you must drive, then park your car in the furthest parking spot so you get to walk at least a bit more than you would if you were parked up front.
Schedule it in.
I know lots of people who would never think of missing a hair or nail appointment.
Yet, they won’t spend 30 minutes exercising?!
Schedule in your workouts, and show up…just like you would for any other type of appointment.
Reduce your media time
It may not seem like you spend a lot of time checking emails, tweeting, updating Facebook, checking the news, playing games with his gaming cpus, etc. but I bet if you timed all those activities you’d be surprised just how much time you really spend doing them.
Take a break and go exercise, get physical instead of playing Angry Birds or Mafia Wars or whatever other games there are.
Set a time for 20 minutes when going on Facebook or Twitter and when the 20 minutes is up, get off the computer and go do something active for 20 minutes, seriously go to a Disposal and give it away if you are not doing anything productive with it, and then go back to the computer to work or play games as Overwatch using Overwatch Boosting from sites online.
The emails, tweets, updates will all be there when you return and you’ll feel better after you get up and moving around!
Exercise while watching
I only knew a handful of people who never watch tv.
So, when you are watching tv…be active.
I personally, watch tv from my exercise bike…that way I’m riding and watching.
I’m not good at just sitting & doing nothing so this works perfectly for me.
Get my heart rate going, get all sweaty and enjoy a good show.
You can do exercises with exercise balls, bands, tubing as well when watching tv.
Do some push ups, plank, dips, jumping jacks during the commercials.
Housework & chores
Cleaning the house isn’t one of the funnest ways to exercise but it can enable you to get both activities done at the same time.
Sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, dusting all work out arms, legs & get you moving.
Do a timed cleaning…set a time for 20-30 mins and make a race of it, see how much cleaning you can get done…get that heart rate going.
Do squats or calf raises while doing laundry and ironing.
Be an active socialite
Plan family outings and time with friends doing something active instead of sitting around watching tv or going to a movie or out to eat.
Instead, plan a day of fun outside walking, biking, playing frisbee, football, skating…
Keep at it
Once you develop a habit, it’ll automatically become part of your daily routine.
Keep exercising in some form and the next thing you know if you do it consistently it’ll become second nature to do it.
Jogging, walking the dog, taking a class at the gym, biking…whatever it is do it on a regular basis by incorporating it into your daily routine and soon you’ll find you automatically start exercising without even thinking about it.
Don’t say yes all the time
Don’t over-extend yourself.
Some people have a hard time saying No when asked to do something…be it babysit for a friend, bake for a special occasion, run an errand, take on extra work, go to every party…
But there’s absolutely nothing wrong by you saying no.
Don’t feel obligated to say yes all the time.
You should feel obligated though to say yes to taking care of yourself and your health so you’ll be around longer and live a healthier life!
Exercise helps keep you healthy so don’t neglect it, don’t put it off…
Make time to be active!
Question of the day
How do you make time to fit exercise in your schedule?
What’s your favorite form of exercise?

Great tips! Morning workouts are a great way to fit in more exercise into your schedule and it’s amazing how good you feel the rest of the day!! My favorite exercise is running, but there are so many other active things I love doing too!

Great post Tara! I fit exercise in my making it a priority- something that must get done. I also look at my schedule for the day and make a plan as to when I can fit in my workout, that way I’m not saying that I don’t have time or something.

What the heck – wake up early? Homey don’t play dat! (Can you name the show I stole that from?). I start cueing fitness classes anytime after 8:30am. I do solo workouts post dawn-thirty. Unless I am Rancho la Puerta fitness spa, then I surprise myself and do the 6:15am mountain hikes. Another strategy – get a puppy. They really really really want to get a walk in!

Great tips, and for the very busy people I especially recommend favoring life patterns that incorporate exercise in everyday’s activities, like climbing stairs instead of taking elevators, walking instead of driving places, actively performing daily chores such as house cleaning. I also like getting an early start, and my first activity everyday is playing ball with my two Lab puppies: Frida and Bruna! May I recommend the series of books “French Women don’t get Fat”by Mireille Guiliano for great tips on health life style habits.
