By now I’m sure pretty most everyone has heard about Twilight. You know the books and the movie that everyone’s either raving about or ragging about. It’s an action packed modern teen love story between a teen girl and a vampire.
Now, that’s why I’m writing this…as usual there are some who are offended or strongly opposed to letting their children read the books or watch the movie because it involves vampires.
We saw the same thing happen when Harry Potter books came out.
Now, the way I see it…kids are actually wanting to read. That in itself is a positive.
I did not read the books, my daughter read all 4 in record time and is awaiting the release of the 5th book (though I hear there was a ‘leak’ or something w/part of that transcript…I honestly don’t know because I don’t keep up to date on all that, just what my daughter told me). Regardless, she blew through these books like none other she’s read before.
I did not see the movie when at theaters (mainly because my daughter didn’t want me to go with her lol otherwise I would’ve) but I was in line at Blockbuster at 11:30 pm Friday March 20th to get it right at midnight since I had prepaid for it months prior. Of course we came home and popped it in the DVD player at 12:30 a.m. and watched it. I think we’ve watched it 5 or 6 times since then and today’s only Tuesday!
Now, this is my take on the movie and if you give it some thought and agree…great
if you give it some thought and don’t agree…fine, too. Everyone’s allowed to have their opinions.
if you refuse to give it any thought and stop reading here…well then you are close minded and insist on everything being your way or no way at all.
Edward Cullen, played by Robert Pattinson is a teen heart throb, the girls go crazy for him which could be some of the added popularity swarming around this movie. Regardless, his character is a teen vampire, though he’s been 17 for awhile as he states in the movie.
Bella, played by Kristen Stewart is a teen girl who has moved to Forks, WA to live with her father while her mom and step father are relocating to Florida.
I don’t want to tell the whole story in case there are people who haven’t read the books or seen the movie yet.
I’m going to highlight some information to show that this movie isn’t bad or demonic as some seem to think.
As far as I can remember there was no cussing or curse words in the entire movie.
If you put aside the fact that Edward is a vampire, it’s nothing more than a teen love story.
Edward is polite and has manners (perhaps since he was really 17 back in 1918 I believe it was).
Edward and his family aren’t human blood sucking vampires, only the blood of animals (which you never seen them do this in the movie).
Bella is thoughtful of Edward and his families differences (they don’t eat) when she went to their home, she ate prior to going there knowing they don’t eat.
Edwards family prepared dinner for Bella so they could actually use the kitchen for the first time, but like I said above Bella already ate to be thoughtful to their ways.
Edward shows self control with Bella, because as much as he wants her blood (as he said in movie, her scent is his own personal brand of heroin) he won’t hurt her and will do whatever it takes to protect her.
Edwards “family” accepts Bella and comes together to protect her when other vampire clan wants to have her for a snack at a baseball game.
After Bella is bitten in the arm by James (bad vampire), Edward sucks the venom from Bella and finds the will power to stop before he’d go too far.
After Bella wants Edward to make her like him at prom, Edward denies her and asks “Is it not enough to have a long happy life with me?”. He could’ve made her into a vampire at that point and yet didn’t.
There’s no blood and gore in the movie (other than when Bella gets hurt by James (the bad vampire) towards the end of the movie and her leg is bleeding.
There’s one ‘fight’ scene where part of Edward’s family kills James (the bad vampire) in order to protect Bella.
That’s it for violence in the entire movie other than 2 killings by the bad vampire clan that you don’t even see details of.
If it weren’t for Edward being a vampire, you’d clearly see:
a teen couple in love.
a teen boy’s family coming together to support and protect the girlfriend.
a teen boy so in love with a girl that he demonstrates self control and does whatever he has to in order to protect the girl.
a close knit family.
So, instead of people being put off because it’s about a vampire perhaps they should really stop and see what good they can get out of the movie rather than making judgment without facts.

Hi Tara!
Thanks for this review of the movie! My daughter and all her friends have read the book although I really knew nothing about it except of course it was a teen love story that involved a vampire. I now know more than I had (my 15 year old son clued me in LOL) so Your perspective is greatly appreciated!

Tara-Loved your post! I am 35 years old and as you described your daughter reading these books like she never had before, I did too! I’ve never been into a series of books this much. I’m not a teenager and I know I’m not alone for my age group loving this series. I enjoyed the movie (saw it *10* times at the theater) and just had a Twi Party with my Twilight pals Saturday night. We feel a bit like we’re in high school again – it’s been a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing your take on the movie! ๐

Thanks Tara for sharing. I am also a big Twilight fan. I devoured the books this past summer and I also bought the movie the day it came out. I absolutely love both the movie and the books! Most of all I love Edward ๐

I like the way how you see this film. There are always several levels in each story. Great, thanks.
