Ok this has been one of my huge pet peeves for awhile now and am just now posting it.
How often do you get an email that was sent to a zillion people?
Too often I’m sure!
How often do you get an email that was sent to a zillion people and the sender did not bcc (blind carbon copy) so now you along with everyone else now have all email addresses to everyone who was sent the original email.
That opens the door for those others to spam you, or better yet when they all hit reply all you get every danged stupid response to the original email.
I don’t know about you, but me personally I respect the email addresses of the people I email and IF I have something to tell everyone in one shot I’ll blind carbon copy them so I type it and send it once but nobody has anyone else’s email address.
And, what really irks me when they do this is when it’s them pushing some stupid “opportunity” or “new product” and they want everyone to jump on the band wagon yet they don’t email you any other time, so why would they think that you’d join in on it if you don’t even “know” them.
Or, how about if they don’t respond to business matter emails that you’ve sent them but yet send an email spamming you a new opp and include you in the mass email without sending it BCC?
Tacky tacky and unprofessional to say the least!
Not to mention the fact that since the person knows I already own my own businesses why would I want to get involved with some “opportunity”?
So, some tips:
When emailing multiple people the same email, make sure to BCC (blind carbon copy) them
Do not use your address book to spam people
If you don’t communicate with those in your address book on a regular basis, don’t spam them when you think you have a new “opportunity” or “product” that they just “have” to join…. odds are they’re not going to join you and all you’re going to do is annoy them.

I’ve been victim of this many times too. Having your email address exposed to numerous other people online makes you shudder. And once your email address is exposed, there’s nothing you can do to retract the damage.

Tara,
Very good advice! This even fits the people who just forward emails all the time…BCC before forwarding! Which by the way forwards tend to annoy me as well.

I hate that too! It’s common sense. Unfortunately, not everyone has it.

Tara,
Nice post! I hate that as well. I also hate the chain emails. You know the ones that use scare tactics, like something bad will happen to you if you don’t forward this email to all your friends within such and such time. Or the ones that are suppose to be religious in nature and if you don’t forward it on you don’t love God. I always ignore/delete these kinds of emails.
