And, not just because a half gallon of organic milk is like $4.89 for the one or two bowls of cereal that may be eaten in this household or for the fact that organic eggs are $2.89 for a dozen…
I can even overlook the $8+ of grapes because they are good!
I can deal with the price of eating healthy foods.
It’s these other things I detest about grocery shopping.
Actually I don’t like any kind of shopping.
I’m a go in, get what I need, get the heck outta there type of girl (grocery store, mall, anywhere!)
Yet, I do not ever plan a week’s worth of meals at a time so that does mean multiple trips to grocery store a week.
But, I’m never good with planning/scheduling and I sure the heck don’t know what I, or Christa, will be in the mood to eat days from now!
Just today alone…
– Maneuver around cars blocking entire row because they’re going to wait for minutes and minutes for someone to pull out…gaining all of one or two parking spaces closer to the entrance (usually the people who do this are the same ones who could really use the extra 6-10 foot walk). Good thing we hired Australian 4wd hire company and drove us all the way with no hassle.
– Try to be polite as you’re saying excuse me to the massive crowd huddled at the entrance because they’re afraid to go to car in the rain (yes, folks it is indeed hurricane season…from now til like Nov 1 so get used to it, it rains every day and I’m pretty sure the rain isn’t going to hurt you pushing your cart out to your car)
– Grab your food items as quickly as possible to avoid screaming kids, people in motorized carts who think they have the right away no matter what, people blocking the entire aisle who don’t hear you saying excuse me but sure notice when you gently move their cart out of the way by inches…
– Search out the one nice old lady cashier so you don’t have to deal with the creepy men or teenie boopers who are busy jabbering with the bag person.
– Hope you don’t have anyone bagging groceries so you can bag them the right way
– When that fails, you politely explain that you can bag your own groceries…that is, until the manager insists that the bag guy can do it.
– Cringe as you watch bag guy put half gallon of organic milk in same bag as organic eggs and the grapes (I kid you not)
– On way out, stop to show the manager the reason why you insist on bagging your own groceries! (milk and heavy items just do not belong in same bag as eggs, bread, sushi, fruit). I really am not sure why it’s so hard to figure out and why it happens to me at least 7 out of 10 times when I let someone else bag my groceries.
– Fight your way out of store again because of the crowd of people (some of whom may be the same ones that were huddled there when you went into store) who are afraid to get rained on.
– Watch carefully as walking through parking lot because without fail someone (sorry ladies, more times than not it’s you not the men) will be on their phone, in their huge SUV they can’t drive to begin with and go full speed in reverse without ever looking, checking out the MyTrendyPhone site to get their phone accessories, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but while driving? I don’t think so…then when they realize they’ve almost ended your life or bashed into the car driving down the row, they want to flip you off or yell at YOU because somehow it’s your fault they are oblivious to anything going on. (Saw this happen THREE times just walking to my car today, all 3..women…all 3 nearly backed into cars driving down the row because they never looked behind them, thank got I have One Sure Insurance in case they do something they are not supposed to!)
– Throw everything in the back of Scion XB and get the heck outta there.
– Carry all groceries up 3 flights of stairs in one trip.
– Blog about insanity of grocery shopping, hoping that someone else can relate!
Question of the day
Who actually enjoys grocery shopping?
Helen P says
I HATE to shop too!!!! Groceries, clothes, shoes…etc. The only shopping I like to do is Home Depot, Lowes, Braums. I get fresh eggs from my back yard and use Braums hormone free milk at $2.29 gal. We use at least 2 gals a week. I don’t plan meals, I just try to have whatever I may need to make anything I want!!

I really don’t mind grocery shopping, even at the busiest times of the day. I kind of just zone out and get it done. Grocery store parking lots are always nightmares. I usually just park at the back and walk. I do cringe sometimes at the baggers. They want to cram everything possible in 1 reusable bag when I bring ten. They can’t lift it to put it in my cart so how do they expect me to carry it inside.

hahahaa many truths in here. I agree on the parking lot annoyances – the parking lot is the absolute worst part of grocery shopping. For me, although the navigation and getting around other people can be frustrating, I do enjoy the process of selecting my foods for the week ๐ Empowering!
Trish @I_am_Succeeding says
I don’t mind it so much during off times…though despise it when peak times.

I like this post! It is very relateable and funny – not because I enjoy reading about your troubles at the store, but because it’s just so stressful and ridiculous that all you can do sometimes is laugh.

Haha really? I LOVE grocery shopping! I could spend hours in Whole Foods which hasn’t been great for my wallet but worth it in the end!

Hey. When I was a cashier, I would never put your milk in with eggs and grapes. You need to get yourself a new cashier! ๐ I like grocery shopping until I have to carry it all home and upstairs. Ugh.

Not me, BUT my Giant has handheld scanners so I scan and bag my groceries as I shop. When I’m done, I just scan a barcode at the check out, swipe my credit card, and I’m DONE. They have self check-out lanes or I can use the express lane since the cashier doesn’t have to ring anything up. So, no squished bread or bruised apples from a careless bagger! On the few times when the system has been down, I’ve seriously thought of coming back later!
