I received a copy of The Real Food Diet Cookbook by Dr Josh Axe to review.
I first saw Dr Axe on YouTube and loved the energy in the video’s and the passion in spreading the knowledge and insight he has on health matters.
He truly is committed to helping people change and is on his way to leading a new health revolution!
This cookbook is unique in many ways.
Let me just start off with saying that I’m thrilled it’s a hard cover spiral cookbook. No more trying to figure out how to keep the book open to the page while preparing the recipe!
The diet programs which are alternatives to medifast is chock full of vibrant photographs of the prepared recipes for recommended program offering which leads to a safe weight loss result.
All the recipes are easy to prepare with a minimum amount of ingredients.
But, before I get into all that I have to start at the beginning of the book.
Dr Axe has an entire section on “real food vs fake food”.
See, this isn’t just a cook book, but a book that also educates you in easy to comprehend terminology and images (for those of you, like myself, who are more visual).
There’s a page on the Real Food Pyramid, discussing types of foods and servings per day.
I also like the fact that he used scripture in the book.
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind ~~ Romans 12:2
The next section is “what’s hot, what’s not”. You’ll discover some of the best real foods and some of the worst fake foods too.
After enjoying that section, you’ll be educated in the abc’s of cooking, equipment and label reading. The label reading is an important task that we all should be doing if we’re buying packaged foods.
Next up, less that/more this.
I love how easy and graphic this section is. It has two lists…one “less that” and the other “more this” and lists a variety of foods along with their description, serving size, calories as well as their glycemic load.
I cannot say how much I appreciate the food matching guide.
This is a quick visual reference key to each recipe. Each icon stands for something and on the recipe pages, you’ll find whatever icons apply to that recipe. They vary from quick recipes to raw foods, kids’ favorites, when you’re sick, when you have low energy, post workout and inflammation pain. Like I said, I’m a visual person so this is a superb reference for making it easy to decide what to make based on circumstances.
Now for the bulk of the book…the recipes…
Of course, breakfast is the first topic. The photographs are mouth watering for the Pumpkin Blueberry Pancakes. There are breakfast quesadilla’s, cereal, granola, omelets, pancakes, quinoa porridge (this is on my list to make!)
The beverage section will quench your thirst just looking at the image of the strawberry lemonade. Yum!
I made the Refreshing Celery Smoothie but was in such a rush to drink it, I forgot to take a pic ๐
sorry…but it was divine!
Next up are salads. These aren’t your ordinary run of the day salads, these are full of nutritious wholesome ingredients. I’m sure you’ll find more than a few you’ll want to try in this section.
After salads, you’ll move on to Soups and Stews. As some of you may know, I do not like soup, at all. That being said though, there are some intriguing soup recipes in this cookbook. I may have to give the Black Bean Soup recipe a try.
To go with your salad and other foods, you’ll come to the Sauces and Dressings section next. I’m considering making the Raw Ranch Dressing so I have something to dip my broccoli and celery in. There’s even a Raw Alfredo Sauce recipe amongst other yummy looking sauces.
Ahhh, now for Main Dishes. This part of the cook book has a variety of items from Pasta with Greens, Raisins & Pine Nuts to Tomatillo Chicken with Black Beans and a slew of dishes in between.
Moving on, we have side dishes followed by a snack section and top that off with a dessert section…everyone loves dessert right? I want to make the Raw Cheesecake recipe…it looks yummmmmmy!
And, that brings us to the end….130 real recipes in The Real Food Diet Cookbook along with informative yet easy to read & comprehend details on how you can eat healthy and transform your health.
I think I’m going to go make a Blackberry Smoothie from page 77…make sure you grab your copy today.
