The Science Of Transdermal Time-Release Patch Delivery Of Dietary Supplements Versus Oral Delivery

For the last 100 plus years, we’ve been swallowing pills, capsules, powdered drinks, and sublingual sprays, to get the benefits of health and fitness dietary supplements.
Today, most doctors will tell you that oral delivery has become “old-school”, as the science of transdermal time-release patch delivery replaces hundreds, if not thousands of dietary supplements and prescriptive medications each year.

The key to understanding the advantages of transdermal patches versus pills, capsules, drinks and sprays, is the word “Delivery”.
The formulas in most oral dietary supplements are good, if not very good!
But the strengths and weaknesses of oral supplement delivery comes into better focus if you understand the how hard it is to delivery supplement formulas when swallowed, versus direct to bloodstream transdermal patch delivery.

OK, that being said, here are the steps, or stages that a perfectly good dietary supplement formula goes through when swallowed in pills, capsules, powdered drinks or sublingual sprays.
1. You swallow the pill, capsule, mixed drink, or spray. Good so far – right?
2. In your stomach, the supplement is bathed in incredibly powerful digestive acids for 2 to 4 hours; depending on what else you eat before, or after you swallow the supplement.
3. Anywhere from 50% to 95% of the original supplement dosage is destroyed by the digestive acids in your stomach
4. After 2 to 4 hours, the surviving supplement dosage leaves your stomach and enters your small intestine where, over another 2 to 6-hours, it can be absorbed into your bloodstream to deliver the benefits of the formula.

Bottom line: When you take any dietary supplement orally, at best you only get 50% of the original formula dosage, and in most cases a lot less then that, no matter how good the formula is!

OK, lets see how transdermal patch delivery works:
1. You place the patch on your arm or your stomach.
2. Over 4 to 12 hours, depending on the patch, the formula dosage moves through your skin, directly into your bloodstream.
3. Most high-quality transdermal patches deliver over 95% of the formula dosage safely into your bloodstream.
4. The time-release function of the patch allows your system to metabolize the formula dosage efficiently so you get the full benefit of the original dosage.
Bottom line: Transdermal patch delivery of dietary supplement formulas is direct to bloodstream delivery and you get the full benefits of the formula dosage over an extended time that allows your system to take full advantage of the formula ingredients and benefits.

Q: Have you always lived a healthy fit lifestyle?
I started on my healthy journey at 19 after I had my first daughter. Prior to having her I never exercised mostly due to being a severe asthmatic. I began weight training and running which actually helped to alleviate my asthma symptoms inspiring to keep working out. I have been working out ever since trying everything from Pilates to Yoga to Bootcamp to Crossfit to…well you get my drift. I became a certified personal trainer at 20 because discovered my passion for fitness and I wanted to share that passion with others, which I did for about 8 years. I am no longer a certified personal trainer now but I am a registered nurse which also allows me to share my passion for health and fitness.
I got pregnant in 2008 and due to a rough pregnancy I basically stopped working out until after I had my daughter in October, but once I go the okay to start exercising again, I did. I started my blog last year as a way to chronicle my journey to a sub-2 hour 1/2 marathon and during this journey I rediscovered my passion for both writing and running. My blog allows me to motivate and inspire others to get and stay fit. 15 years after working out for the first time I am still as passionate about fitness and this year I plan to take my goals to the next level by attempting to run a 1/2 marathon in 1:45 and the NYC marathon (my first) in 4:00.

Q: What keeps you going, motivated?
My family keeps me motivated because I want to live the healthiest life possible so I can be with them for a very long time, plus I want to set a good example for my daughter. Reading other blogs and connecting with other fitness minded people keep me motivated, it is inspiring to see what other people are achieving and the support that also comes along with being a part of a blogging community.

Q: What is your favorite workout?
My favorite workout is running. I fell in love from the moment I took my first run. My relationship with running has been rocky, we have had our ups and downs and some injuries to boot but I can’t imagine my life without running. Running helps me to reduce my stress, feel good and work through my problems. During my long runs is probably the only time my mind quiets and only focuses on one thing…running.

Q: What are some of your goals?
I have 2 big goals for this year. The first is to run a 1/2 marathon in 1:45 and the second is to run the NYC marathon in 4:00.

Q: What are some of your accomplishments or things you’re proud of?
My biggest accomplishments are my 2 daughters and being married to my husband for almost 12 years (together 16). Running the Long Island 1/2 Marathon in 1:54:36 on 5/1/11 was a big accomplishment for me.
I am proud of the fact that at 24 years old I went back to school and became a Registered Nurse. I am also proud that I started my blog last year and it is still going strong!!!

Q: What is one random fact we should know about you?
I have live on Long Island my whole life, a short 30-45 minute train away from the city, NYC that is, and until this past October I have never gone to the city on my own. My first adventure to the city for the 1st NYC blogger playdate, where I met up with a bunch of other bloggers I had never met for hot yoga and brunch! I guess you could say I am all grown up now!!!

Q: What words of advice would you like to leave the readers?
Start today, start slow and find something you love. Putting off getting fit until a better day doesn’t work, just do it!! Start slow and ease into any activity to avoid injury. Find activities you love, if you try running and hate it then find something else….if you love what you are doing then you are more likely to stick with it!

Run often, Love completely, Live Fully

If you eat healthy, it can:
help lower risk of disease

5 Tips to How To Eat Healthy

1) No packaging — if it comes in packaging, don’t eat it.
2) Eat as close to nature — which goes along with #1 but if you fail at that then at least this is the next step. Eat foods in their natural form. Organic is even better for some foods, some you don’t have to focus on whether or organic or not.

3) “Fat Free” and “Sugar Free” do not equate to healthy eating. Ignore these items and eat healthy fats which the body does need to function properly. Instead of sugar free which usually means chemical crap Splenda (Sucralose), find natural alternatives if you don’t want to eat sugar.
4) Eat whole foods…unprocessed and unrefined foods (yes, kinda goes along with #1 and #2 see a pattern here?)
5) Eat appropriate portions. We live in a super size society. Practice portion control or eat until your hunger is satisfied, not til you’re stuffed.

There you have it, it’s really not that difficult to eat healthy and why wouldn’t you want to have a healthier lifestyle?!

Question of the day
How do you eat healthy?

Many people think of Melatonin supplementation as just helping them achieve a more restful quality sleep.
While that is certainly true, Melatonin supplementation also yields many other important benefits that are supported by studies & clinical trials.

Benefits:
Sleep Disorders – This is the best-known benefit of Melatonin supplementation. When taken 30-90 minutes before bedtime, Melatonin acts as a mild hypnotic. Melatonin levels in the bloodstream rise and in most cases sleep begins 30-90 minutes sooner. Melatonin is the standard treatment for “Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome”. It also is also used to help minimize the effects of jet lag. Melatonin supplementation also helps people working night shifts adjust to daylight sleep cycles. It is also a recommended treatment for people with Insomnia.
Headaches (Migraines/Cluster) – Several clinical studies indicate that supplementation with melatonin is an effective preventive treatment for migraines and cluster headaches.
Alzheimer’s Disease – Melatonin receptors appear to be important in mechanisms of learning and memory in mice, and melatonin can alter electrophysiological processes associated with memory. Several clinical trials are now underway with people, to determine if Melatonin will help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
Cancer – A systematic review of un-blinded clinical involving a total of 643 cancer patients using melatonin found a reduced incidence of death. Another clinical trial is due to be completed in 2012.
Anti-Oxidant - Melatonin is a powerful anti-oxidant and suppressant of tumor development that is produced at night; when someone works in artificial light, they generally have lower melatonin and may be more likely to develop cancer. Melatonin supplements simulate the melatonin production at different times that does not occur during regular sleeping hours for people who work night shifts.
Obesity – Melatonin is involved in energy metabolism and body weight control in small animals. Many studies show that melatonin supplementation reduces body weight and abdominal fat in experimental animals. It is interesting to note that the weight loss effect of melatonin does not require the animals to eat less and to be physically more active. Whether the results of animal studies can be extrapolated to human obesity is a matter of future clinical trials.
Anti-Aging – Aging Research has supported the anti-aging properties of melatonin. Younger children hit their peak melatonin production at night, and some researchers believe that the level of melatonin peaks earlier as we get older. This may explain why older adults go to bed earlier, wake up earlier, and have more sleep problems than children do. Some studies have shown that melatonin plays a crucial part in the aging process and that it may act as an anti-aging agent when taken by older adults and the longevity of the mice. The researchers hope these results can also be applied to humans.
Drug Abuse - Basic research indicates that melatonin may play a significant role in modulating the effects of drugs of abuse such as cocaine.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Research shows that after melatonin is administered to ADHD patients reduced the time needed to fall asleep.
Gallbladder Stones - Melatonin presence in the gallbladder has many protective properties, such as converting cholesterol to bile, preventing oxidative stress, and increasing the mobility of gallstones from the gallbladder. It also decreases the amount of cholesterol produced in the gallbladder by regulating the cholesterol that passes through the intestinal wall.
Mood Disorders - Melatonin has been shown to be effective in treating one form of depression and is being considered as a therapy for Bipolar Disorder.

Benefits Of GABA Supplementation:
Relaxing, Calming, Anti-Anxiety
Helps to regulate muscle tone
May increase HGH production

1. Get a program that will best suit you. Everyone is different. If you hate to run, don’t run. If you can’t stand yoga, don’t do it. Do what you enjoy and what works for you.

2. Set realistic goals. Make sure that your goals and the time frame are achievable and realistic.

3. Work on those muscles. Cardio is great and a necessity as well but many avoid working their muscles. Do it! You will not turn into The Hulk.

4. Be consistent. Consistency is key. Don’t jump into a new workout full throttle & do more than you should, burn out and end up doing nothing. Take it slow and consistently adding to your workout program.

5. Variety. Every exercise program should have variety. You can change your workouts & goals to keep you motivated and on the go. Doing this will help you prevent being bored and losing energy physically and mentally.

6. Be Motivated! Renew that motivation daily.

Question of the day
What do you do to keep on track with your fitness goals?

Today’s T word is: Target Heart Rate

Target Heart Rate is defined as: Optimum heart rate at which person should train in order to achieve desired results. The target heart rate zone is often expressed as a percentage of your maximum heart rate and is usually between 75% and 85% of MHR depending on your goals and fitness level.

I love using my Omron HR-210 Strapless Heart Rate Monitor to make sure I’m working out in the right zone.

If you want to calculate your target heart rate, here’s an easy heart rate calculator that’ll do it for you.
I hate percentages and math so it’s easier for me to use a calculator than try to do it this way:

Find your Zones!
Your Upper ♥ Limit: 220 – (Your Age) x Desired Upper ♥ Zone
Your Lower ♥ Limit: 220 – (Your Age) x Desired Lower ♥ Zone

Optimal Training Zones:
Health Maintenance (65%-78%) ~~ Low intensity level training. Good if you’re just beginning and strengthening your cardiovascular system.
Aerobic Exercise (65%-85%) ~~ Increases strenght and endurance. Burns calories faster and can be sustained during longer workouts.
Anaerobic Exercise (78%-90%) ~~ Improves speed and power. This zone builds muscle faster, but cannot be maintained for longer workouts.
Red Line (90%-100%) ~~ Maximum capacity.

Some exercises for getting heart rate up:
Running
Kickboxing
Skiing
Kettlebell
Spinning Class
Biking
Elliptical Trainer
Rowing
Walking
Jumping Rope
Zumba

Question of the day
What are you going to do today to get your heart rate going?
